Recognised Societies

The Federation is responsible for formally recognising Societies and new Societies may apply to join the Federation. New Societies are asked to show evidence that they are a proper society with proof of membership, a clear understanding of construction history and evidence of having successfully run a number of national conferences and events. Submissions should be directed to the committee.

List of Recognised Societies (in Order of Date of Foundation)

The Construction History 

Based in the United Kingdom.

Founded in 1985, the oldest Society in the world, accepts members from all nations.

Hosted the Second International Congress on Construction History in 2006.

Holds an annual conference in the UK every year. Published the journal Construction History

 

Sociedad Española de Historia de la Construcción (Spain and Spanish speaking countries)

Based in Spain.

Founded in 1996, the second oldest Construction History society in the world (CHS is the oldest).

Holds National Congresses every two years and was responsible for holding the first International Congress on Construction History in Madrid in 2003. Website contains links to many sources for construction history, especially in Spanish. Publishes proceedings.

 

The Construction History Society of America  (USA)

Based in the USA, affiliated with the CHS.

With interest in construction history growing in the United States an organizing committee was formed in May 2007.

Holds two conferences a year and other events in the United States. Hosted the Fifth International Congress on Construction History in Chicago in 2015. Has regular newsletter.

 

L’association Francophonedes Historiens dela Construction (France And French Speaking Countries)

Based in France.

Officially founded in 2013, after two successful conferences on Francophone Construction History and the International Congress on Construction History in Paris in 2012.

The Society has a site providing a good set of bibliographical links and news on the latest events. Publishes the journal Aedificare

 

Gesellschaft für Bautechnikgeschichte (Germany and German-speaking countries)

Based in Germany.

Created in June  2013, the German Society of construction history with a strong engineering and conservation interest.

Founded after the success of the Third International Congress on Construction History held in Cottbus in 2009. Holds regular conferences. Publishes proceedings.

 

Sociedade Portuguesa de História da Construção  (Portugal and Portuguese speaking countries)

Based in Portugal

Created in 2015, covers Portugal and Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking countries.

Holds regular conferences. Hosted the Seventh International Congress on Construction History in 2021. Publishes proceedings.
